Outré is starting to come to life. We’re all hard at work behind the curtains. I urge all you storytellers out there to get involved with our 3rd issue. Prose writers, screenwriters or poets or whatever. Get submittin’!

Hi again!

Another Wednesday, another update from the Outré. This last week we’ve seen both lovely pages coming in for our initial issue (set to launch in May) and a few submissions to our 3rd issue (already!), launching in 2014.

Ronald Montgomery’s story about the dog Ludmila is illustrated by the always terrific Jim Giar. They’ve got the excellent Tim Switalski with them to colour the tale, and brilliant Rafer Roberts to put the crown on with his lettering. Here’s the first page from the story, in pencils:

Tune back every Wednesday and we’ll give you some exclusive previews on all the stories and illustrations for issue 1. The diversity of stories is as broad as the variety of the artwork. There will surely be something for everyone in Outré.

We did a little satellite scoop and discovered that the contributors for issue one come from eight different countries…

A graphic novel in the making

The seed of a new project grew out of a hole, so to speak. Mesmerized by the humongous sinkholes that appeared in Guatemala, and particularly a minor one, appearing in the bedroom (!) of an elder woman, a story about a girl’s struggle to be both carer and child in her family came to life. A dark and scary story, with heart and soul.

This was back in 2011. And while I was working on my main screenplay for my Master’s degree, the story about Rosanna and her dog Ciko, Jesus, her little brother and her grandfather, Arturo, slowly started filling the pages.

Late 2011, an artist who I was keen to have with me on the story came aboard, but disappeared after a while. The project was on ice for quite a few months, as I was busy with other scripts and screenplays. But I finally, as spring arrived in 2012, found the energy and time to look for the perfect artist.

Nothing turned up, really. This was a collaboration, no upfront pay. My offer was splitting the property 50/50 with the right artist. Which means it was hard, next to impossible, to find someone who had the level and commitment the project needed. Several of my fellow comic book creators really liked the project and would gladly have joined, had their schedules allowed it. Summer came, and I had almost forgotten about my “call to artists” for the project. My energy was focused on screenplays, on getting stuff finished, especially my MA degree.

And then, when several projects were moving ahead and my schedule was brimming, that perfect artist answered my call. The lovely character designs and sketches you’ve seen accompanying this article come from Steeven (@YdAofficial on Twitter), a fantastic illustrator, letterer and graphic designer.

We are working on the so-called “pitch package” at the moment, which means a document with the sole aim to “sell” the project to publishers and editors. In broad strokes it consists of the pitch, which summarizes the story into a short sweet paragraph with punch, a brief synopsis/outline of the story that reveals more details than the pitch, but only the important parts, and last, but definitely not least, a bunch of finished pages, meaning coloured and lettered. All this is supposed to give the editor/publisher a good sense of the story, the quality of the product and the potential it has in today’s market.

I’ll blog more about the project in the future and reveal the story, with some pages and script snippets. Maybe I’ll even reveal the title and which publishers we are in contact with. Meanwhile, follow Steeven on Twitter and check out his website!

xen·o·pho·bi·a

[zen-uh-foh-bee-uh, zee-nuh-]

noun
an unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange.

Origin:
1900–05; xeno- + -phobia

We’ve all had it, to some degree. We’re all born with it. We’ve all felt it. Against ourselves. In society. In our community. Fear of the strange, fear of what we are not familiar with permeates mankind. Thus, I bet you have a story inside you, in any shape or form, that deals with xenophobia!
From the 1st of February to the 1st of May we hold our submission doors open. Read the submission guidelines and start hammering down that eight-page script. Note that due to the lengthy “window”, we will not be able to respond before May comes, so please don’t take the silence for ignorance. We’ll go through all submissions, and everyone will get a reply.

So far the Outré group consists of 8…

2013

The year of ragnarok has begun. It’s looking to be an interesting, and great, year!

photo-full

2013 will see two anthologies released with stories penned by me. One is the next FUBAR chapter, American History Z. The other is Ignition, a massive anthology from 215 Ink. FUBAR has already had an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign and will soon be available across the world, online and in book/comic stores. More news on both closer to their release dates.

Since it’s the beginning of the year it’s list time. Here’s a list of my goals for 2013. And when ragnarok comes to an end, we can all see if I’ve reached the goals.

1. The epic comic series Empire of Blood – with Michael, Jelena and Gaspar – picked up by a large publisher.

2. Whole and Earthtale, two very different horror graphic novels, with Aaron and Steeven, picked up by each their publisher. Both books are geared towards specific publishers which I will reveal if they go through.

3. Make a successful Kickstarter campaign for The Wreckage of Terror, the follow-up to my graphic novel The Vessel of Terror. So that me and Dave can move forward with production and give you the eeriest horror story in comic history.

4. Get one of my screenplays/concepts optioned.

5. Launch our anthology Outré to the world!

I have several other goals I’d love to cram into 2013, but these come first. There are a few new ideas and concepts I would love to have time to move forward with, but it all depends on how smooth other projects go. But the gears are oiled, the gloves are off and Fenriz is saddled.
